What is I/O Virtualisation?

Virtensys is first-to-market with a new class of data centre switches that virtualise server I/O resources.

The award-winning VIO-4000 I/O Virtualisation series consolidates and virtualises network and storage connectivity to a rack of servers and provides up to 80 Gbps of Ethernet, up to 32Gbps of FC uplink bandwidth and up to 16TB of local storage connectivity to the servers. The VIO-4000 series also increases the performance of virtualized servers to unprecedented levels by providing VMs with the highest level of connectivity bandwidth and access to I/O line-rate while minimising the CPU I/O processing overhead. The series enables the deployment of Stateless computing and private cloud environments using industry-standard x86 servers, OS and applications and does'nt't require any fork-lift upgrades.

The VIO-4000 I/O Virtualisation series eliminates and consolidates server I/O adapters, network and storage access layer switches and cables in a rack. The series connects to each server using a single PCI Express (PCIe) cable that connects directly to the server native PCIe bus and is compliant with the PCISIG Single-Root IOV (SR-IOV) and Multi-Root IOV (MR-IOV) specifications. This removes the need to deploy any new network in the data centre and reduces I/O power consumption, capital equipment costs, number of cables, server management complexity and operational expenses by more than 60 percent.

The VIO-4000 series are the first products on the market to consolidate, virtualise and share the major types of server networking and storage connectivity including Ethernet, Fibre Channel, FCoE, iSCSI and SAS/SATA. This results in providing the industry's best I/O price/performance and lowest energy consumption for deploying network and storage connectivity to servers.

The VIO-4000 series enable servers to be wired once, and all I/O resource moves/adds/changes can be made from an embedded remote management web console, without any physical changes in the rack. The VIO-4000 series can be deployed in all popular high availability environments.

Virtensys has made significant breakthroughs in PCI Express switching and hardware-accelerated virtualisation technology. This enables Virtensys to extend its product line to virtualise and share memory within a cluster enabling faster inter-process communication, support solid-state disks and high performance storage units.

The switches deliver the industry's best server I/O price/performance and lowest energy consumption for accessing network and storage infrastructures through traditional or converged networks. The VIO-4000 series won the Best of New Technology award at VMworld 2009, the Techworld Virtualisation Product of the Year for 2009 and have been named one of CRN's Top 20 Storage Products.

Virtensys I/O Virtualisation solutions drive the transformation of server and storage platforms into more efficient IT infrastructures where all the server I/O resources are virtualized, dynamically allocated on demand, independently scaled and optimally utilised. With these systems, data centre configuration and management becomes a remote, automated process that eliminates physical re-configuration. I/O Virtualisation enables very dense server and storage deployments and drives the rapid adoption of new usage models and IT services such as green IT, cloud computing and Software-As-A-Service.

Virtensys' I/O Virtualisation appliances complement standard and virtualized operating systems. The systems can be deployed immediately without disrupting existing data centre servers, networks or management processes, thus protecting organisations' investments in their IT infrastructure.
